St. Paul's New Beacon – The City Hopes History Repeats Itself at Beacon Bluff.
“3M became a beacon of innovation at this site,” the St. Paul Port Authority says of its Beacon Bluff development. Now the SPPA is looking for new beacons to occupy its 61 acres in the east side neighborhood of Dayton’s Bluff.
Several 1930s structures that were 3M’s headquarters are available for reuse, including President William L. McKnight’s old offices, but the majority of the land is open for new construction. Already building there are the medical transportation group of St. Paul’s HealthEast Care System and Baldinger Bakery. The 122-year-old St. Paul bakery (McDonald’s is a customer) will nearly triple the size of its operations with its new facility opening in 2011.
Branding the site as Beacon Bluff was done by Peter Hill Design, an Edina firm run by former east-sider Peter Hill. He says branding a piece of land was trickier than working with consumer products for two reasons. One, the audience or “consumer” isn’t in one tidy niche. The brand had to be “open ended” to appeal to all types of businesses, regionally and nationally, he says. Second, unlike many products, this development could stand for decades.
“So in the back of our heads,” Hill says, “we had, ‘This is going to be here for 50 years, and may not change. What would we want to see in 50 years? What do we think is going to be timeless?’”

Custom Press Kit Unveiled for Kim Salmela
June 05, 2010
Peter Hill Design created a unique high-style press kit ‘in-a-box’ to showcase the designs of international interior designer Kim Salmela. The press kit is rich in texture, color and personal style.
At first glance, the thin metallic box resembles a modern stylish computer laptop bearing a deep plum script label ‘Kim Salmela’. The silver 9 x 12 inch box then opens to a faux fabric lining in rich plum and jewel tones with metallic gold accents. These colors and the fabric motif design elements are carried through into a custom, grommet studded portfolio booklet. This 16 page booklet combines white space, illustrations of furniture design sketches, rich color photography and reprints of press about Kim. It includes an inset vellum, a personal letter from the designer and smaller color ‘swatch’ pages replicating a designer’s fabric book.
Designer Kim Salmela said, “This press kit was inspired. It is full of the tasteful, classic chic details that are so vital to my designs. The kit was ultimately both professional, yet personal – creating an intimacy with all those who received it. The Peter Hill Design team was exceptional from concept through execution.”

GDUSA Honors Peter Hill Design For Dried Fruit Packaging
February 04, 2010
Peter Hill Design has been named a winner of 2010 American Package Design Awards by Graphic Design USA magazine for Newman's Own Organics dried fruit packaging. The American Package Design Awards recognizes the best and brightest designs in their national competitions. This competition celebrates well-designed graphics, but more importantly, the power of design to advance the brand and forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.
The new packaging design delivered increased retail shelf visibility to the five-year old national product while boosting brand recognition both in stores and in consumers’ pantries. The fresh design presents a cohesive shelf presentation, changing from multiple colored bags to a unified and dominant gold background color with two banners, one for the Newman’s Own® Organics brand and another for the individual product name. The redesign leverages the namesake imagery, placing the Newman’s Own Organics logo just below the zipper bag opening so the branding stays intact once the package is opened. The design re-used a series of strong farm field photos unique to each product but stretched the shape horizontally – creating an illusion of a larger package, increasing visible shelf presence. Rich saturated colors on a glossy product bag contribute to images of freshness and a premium product.
Another significant change to the design was the addition of “Nell’s stories” on the back of each organic dried fruit bag to personalize the product to Nell Newman, daughter of the namesake Paul Newman who founded the original Newman’s Own product line. Research has shown that consumers want to make a personal connection with their brands and the new package design facilitates this experience for the organic dried fruit buyer.
Peter Hill, president of the firm, said, “Our team was excited to work with the strong Newman’s Own Organics brand and to maximize its power and recognition for both returning and new consumers.”
About Newman’s Own Organics: Newman’s Own Organics was established as a division of Newman’s Own in 1993, and became a separate company in late 2001. They specialize in organic food products that have world-wide distribution.
